This year’s football season was full of excitement, domination and heartbreak. But, for a second year in a row, the St. Edward football team was knocked out of the playoffs by the Mentor Cardinals. There was a feeling of devastation within the players and fans alike. Loosing only be three points, 41-38, the eagles had multiple opportunities to win the game. In the end, each of their attempts fell short. There were bright spots for the eagles, though, including 343 yards in the air from junior quarterback Brett Kean. St. Edward’s defense could not get a grip on Mentor’s dynamic offense, led by senior quarterback Connor Krizancic. The Cardinals offense totaled 641 total yards, 482 of which was accredited to Krizancic. As the game clock struck zero, there eagles felt heartbroken. The senior class, who started and ended their careers in the St. Edward football program with a loss to Mentor, proved their great leadership ability to all of those who doubted them. Next year, the eagles will look to make another run at the State Title, returning a majority of their skill players on offense and defense. All five starting offensive lineman will graduate this year, as well as three defensive lineman. As long as the team can fill these big holes, they will be return to state contention next year.
