Romanian Government Pushes Proposal for Canadian Company to Mine Gold With Cyanide

Nick Morris ’15

Romanian people are split with different opinions concerning the controversial new proposal by the Romanian Government allowing for Canadian company Gabriel Resources Ltd. to expand and modernize an old mining site in Rosia Montana originally built in the Communist era. The plans would call for the heavy use of cyanide, which some suspect will have harmful environmental repercussions. It would also be the largest mine in all of Europe.  Many protesters have recently been lining up at Bucharest’s University Square, and also in Cluj near the proposed site, asking lawmakers not to approve the law. In contrast, many miners have rallied in favor of the mine. The proposal is being sent to the Romanian Parliament sometime within the next month.
